In 1991, “K.A.R.E.S.” [Kodiak Amateur Radio Emergency Service] was formally organized. This group of dedicated amateurs originally started out with a 1969 Travel Trailer converted into a mobile communications unit. Later in 2003 the group received donation of a 32 foot passenger bus that was converted to mobile communications and a “command post” for Public Safety. That unit is still in active use today. K.A.R.E.S. has routinely monitors the 42mile foot race that “SPARK” originally monitored back in the early days. Meetings are every Monday evening fro 7-9pm at the Bayside Fire Station, 4606 Rezanof Drive E.
